Syrian Damascus Mosaic Marquetry Jewelry Box

Found this one in a little shop in England tucked away. A one-of-a-kind treasure from my trip, though it traveled a much longer road to get there. This is genuine Damascene mosaic marquetry, mother of pearl, bone and wood inlay, dated to the mid-20th century by its construction. The hinge and lock are hand fitted telling us that it was made before these got mass produced. No two panels are exactly alike. 

It carries a little  wood loss on the back of the box from its age and travels, which only makes the craftsmanship more honest. A beautiful place to keep jewelry, style a shelf or sit on a desk.
